Rice-Upland Crop Rotation Experiment (RUCRE)

Local identifier
Rice-Maize Experiment
Years operational
1993—
Objective
Determine the effect of crop diversification from lowland flooded rice to an upland crop on soil properties and measures of soil quality including soil organic matter, mineralization and carbon balances.
Description
The experiment is planted with both maize and rice during dry seasons, but is planted solely with rice during wet seasons.

Factors
Factor name
Factor levels
nitrogen fertilizer exposure
Three levels: zero N, moderate, high
N1 (0N Control)
1993—
Applied to crop: All crops
From 2012, dry season crops received SSNM, wet season crops had no inputs.
N2 (Low N)
1993—2005
N3 (High N)
1993—2011
Applied to crop: All crops
N2 (SSNM)
2006—
Applied to crop: All crops
Site specific nutrient management replaced N2 (Low N). From 2012 conventional tillage in dry season.
N3 (SSNM)
2012—
Applied to crop: All crops
Site specific nutrient management replaced N2 (Low N). From 2012 no tillage in dry season.
